Be aware when searching for a mortgage

When you are trying to obtain a mortgage, searching on the Internet is a great place to start. This will give you an idea about what is being offered by whom. However, exercise caution. Try to validate anyone who is offering a loan before you give out any personal information. This is a time-consuming process, but consider how long could it take you to undo an identity theft if the company is not legitimate? How long could it take you to get your money back if you discover that the company has emptied your bank account?

When searching online for lending information, note the complaints that often appear when you run your search. There is one company with a name that sounds similar to a government program that is always advertisements on television, and has had many of complaints that are found online. Lots of people have paid thousands of dollars and are left with nothing to show for their efforts in trying to refinance their escalating mortgage. Who knows if they will get their money back?

Look to well known names and places that you are actually aware of and have heard of for some years. That internet deal might sound great, but how do you really know? Do some research. With the tools available on the internet, you can do a search on anyone and find complaints. See if the complaints are being responded to and resolved. Having said that, do you really want to take the risk and then hang about waiting for your complaint to be attended to? Probably not.

Does the broker or lender you are considering belong to a particular Lenders Association? Get in touch with the association for information about the company and/or any complaints.

It definitely pays to refinance your mortgage with a company you know. Look for businesses you are familiar with and trust. Banks, mortgage brokers or credit unions that you have been aware of for some years could be your best bet.

Never pay to apply for a mortgage loan. Request that it be included in your total expenses, at settlement, that will be paid for at closure. Hand over any upfront money to the office that is handling your closing, or to your solicitor if you are using one.

With the various scams and money-making attempts by unscrupulous advertisers, it pays to be safer than sorrier.
