Find a rental property in Glasgow

When looking for a flat for rent in Glasgow, it pays to keep a few things in mind. As with every other city, Glasgow has different areas which appeal to different people. The parts of Glasgow that are considered desirable locations to rent are highly sought after and, therefore, attract a much higher rent.
When you are budgeting for a new property to rent, remember that you are likely to be liable for at least 4 weeks rent as a deposit and then probably another couple of weeks rent in advance. Then there is the cost of moving. Unless you’ve got friends that are prepared to help, it can be an expensive business. For this reason, it might be worth looking at truck or trailer hire to keep your costs down.

Look carefully at the tenancy agreement and lease. Especially the fine print! Some landlords or estate agents insist on the property being absolutely spotless when you move out and often insist on the carpets being cleaned. This may mean you could hire a carpet cleaner and do it yourself, but many lease agreements insist on the carpets being professionally cleaned and this is not particularly cheap, especially if you’ve rented a big apartment.

Also consider the costs involved in your choice of location. You may want to live in a place that is close to the city or the local nightlife. However, if this is in a completely different location to where you are employed, transport costs become an issue. Public transport in Glasgow is generally reliable but not always inexpensive.

Glasgow offers some great rental properties but when you are budgeting for rental accommodation, don’t forget about living expenses. Paying a high rent for a great view of the city is all very well, but it wears a bit thin if you are living on Marmite on toast...

So, when considering renting in Glasgow, do your homework. Be sure that your outgoing expenses are less than two thirds of your income. Glasgow is a beautiful city and an exciting place to live. Make sure you have the means to enjoy it!
